The emergence of AI has changed technology for the better or worse. It has gotten bigger and is now used almost everywhere. It’s so easy to use AI for anything, and that includes schoolwork.
Constantly using AI in school can be detrimental to students’ education. Oftentimes, students just use what an AI generated and pass it off as their own work. This doesn’t help you understand or learn a topic you’re struggling with at all. It makes students rely on AI to get their work done rather than trying it for themselves.
The increase in the usage of AI has not only impacted students’ learning, but also their grades. Teachers have grown increasingly paranoid due to how often students are submitting unoriginal work. Some run assignments through AI checkers and for others it’s just obvious when a student uses it. However, this paranoia has also led to cases where students have been wrongfully accused of using AI. Now everyone has to be careful with what they submit, no matter if they’re using AI or not.
Since AI is so accessible to students, it leads them to rely on AI for all of their schoolwork. When it comes to a question that they don’t know how to answer, they directly go on ChatGPT or Gauth Math, instead of learning how to do it themselves. If a teacher were to assign homework, the students would just use AI to find the answer. Then if a teacher were to give a quiz on the homework that they assigned, the student would be confused and not able to answer the question.
AI honestly does more damage than help. The use of AI has led to teachers being paranoid and constantly having to note and make warnings for AI usage. Imagine you’re an English teacher who assigns an essay to all of their classes. Previously you had already assigned an essay, and most of the students had used AI. That will make you paranoid and now you have to check every single one of the essays to make sure that no one used AI on it. That would lead to more time spent on grading. It makes life harder for teachers because they can’t trust their students anymore.
Some students had a say on this:
“What is your opinion on AI usage in schools?”
“AI usage has increased over the past years and it is used in our everyday life, in school and at home. When we are given assignments at school, regardless of the class, we open AI and we get the answers. This affects our learning and leads us to making mistakes that will only haunt us as we move on. I don’t think it’s beneficial. The usage of AI should be monitored because kids aren’t learning anything at all. These AI [bots] are solving everything for us and we aren’t learning anything.”
“Do you feel like AI makes students lazier since they tend to rely on it so much?”
“AI increases a student’s lazy behavior to the point that they rely on it because AI ‘helps’ students [take] less time to do homework so they can do whatever they want. It can be a lack of motivation since students now just want to get out of school and not do anything school-related.”
“What do you think the biggest effect of AI usage is?”
“The biggest effect of AI usage is that people/humans would lose their jobs to AI due to how advanced [it] has become.”
“How do you think we could positively use AI to benefit us instead of it just being a tool for when we get lazy?”
“AI can be seen as a positive benefit because AI can give students instant feedback and support they need for schoolwork. Also, AI is very accessible, so they can use it for studying and researching efficiently.”
