Martin Luther King was born in 1929 in the USA to African parents. During 1929 segregation was seen as normal as it was made a law around the year 1865. However, only African Americans suffered the results of segregation. African Americans and whites were kept separated, they weren’t allowed to be in the same schools, use the same bathrooms, or drink in the same water fountain. African Americans were seen as “inferior”, and whites were seen as “superior”. African Americans were treated unequally in their day-to-day lives. Getting a job was hard for blacks; they got the worst and most unstable jobs compared to whites. They were paid unfairly compared to whites, segregation also affected black kids in their education as the education system funded more in white schools than in African American schools.
Many African American people had the desire to end segregation as they were living a life that they suffered much in but were scared and felt like their voices would go unheated. Scared that they would get hurt by the people who took away their rights; In the mid-1950’s Martin Luther king showed bravery and courageousness he was a baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement, he aimed to end legalization segregation once and for all, he knew the consequences that would come with speaking up but for him all that mattered was not just sticking up for his people but setting equally among all and end discrimination.
In 1963, Martin Luther King gave his famous speech called “I Have a Dream” More than 200,000 people showed up to hear his speech. Not long after President Lydon Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This meant that all discrimination and inequality against blacks was over. This law Prohibited and ceased segregation in public places, such as libraries and public schools. And also ended discrimination in African Americans’ employment. Martin Luther King did a huge role in history ending segregation and discrimination against blacks. And creating equality.
This teaches us that we shouldn’t be afraid to stand up for what we believe in just like Martin Luther King did. He was a brave leader who fought against people’s rights, and changed history.
