WC Bryant High School hosted a Women’s History Month celebration in the library on March 7, 2024. Upon entering the library, students were greeted by lovely decorations and warm smiles. The presentation started once the students were seated and settled in. Teachers and students took turns introducing the event and sharing their anecdotes and interpretations of what Women’s History is all about.
Following their presentation, the presenters went on to explain the task that the students would be performing. There was a dish, a blindfold, a big spoon, and a bag of cotton balls. One student from the group was given a blindfold and instructed to take the spoon and scoop the cotton balls onto the table. The cotton balls were spread out on the table, and under the direction of the other students in the group, one student had to put on the blindfold, take the spoon, and scoop the cotton balls onto the plate that was waiting for them. In less than five minutes, all of the cotton balls were supposed to be on the dish. After the activity was over Bryant Cheerleaders shared their food and distributed it to the students, and when they finished the event concluded.
As we head further into March Bryant is sure to have more little activities to commemorate the celebration of Women. However, how did celebrating Women’s History Month begin?
Well, Women’s History Month was first evolved in Santa Rosa, California during the late 1970’s. At first the Education Task Force of Sonoma County planned a “Women’s History Week”. This movement soon spread across the country receiving other communities attention initiating for their own Women’s History Week. Soon the National Women’s History Project took flight successfully gaining recognition. After President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8th 1980 to be National Women’s History Week, seven years later Congress passed Public Law 100-9 initiating to designate March as “Women’s History Month”. Between 1988 and 1994 Women’s History Month has been officially established for everyone across the globe. After years and years of Women fighting for their rights, their voices to be heard, and just for their place in society, they are finally recognized through this month that highlights all of their achievements.
