
Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is popularly known for its symbolism and interpretations of love, wealth and the American dream. Virtually every high school student graduates having read this novel as it provides explorations of timeless themes, such as social class, materialism, idealized love and the illusory of the American dream.
Like most popular novels, people wanted to see this rich story come to life. Which then led to the adaptation of the Broadway musical of Gatsby. Today, you can watch the Tony award nominated Broadway musical! The show started its previews on March 29, 2024, At the Broadway theater and officially opened on April 25, 2024. But the show itself can be dated back to 1926 when its first ever stage adaptation was aired. A play by Owen Davis. It premiered on Broadway but it is unaffiliated with the musical.
Similar to most books that are converted to movies and musicals, there are differences between the two.
For one, the role of Jordan Baker was either or more heavily incorporated into the musical. The relationship between Nick Carraway and Jordan Baker has more of an effect on the storyline throughout the show. Along with Myrtle Wilson’s role which is represented a bit more, emotionally connecting the audience to her persona.
The three main roles played by the actresses did an effective job. The films portray Daisy Buchanan to be a pretty face that Gatsby falls for. Both in the writing and acting we see her personality come alive and go more in depth on her concept of love and her struggles of being a woman during this era.
