This late October marks the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk taking place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where Bryant students and faculty proudly participated.
Breast cancer is a type of disease in which abnormal breast cells grow and form tumors. Breast cancer has different variations and it all depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in women, but it can be found in men as well. Some of its causes are, the age (most commonly 40 and above), hormonal changes, family history, obesity, lifestyle (too much alcohol consumption), pregnancy, menarche, the environment (too much exposure to radiation), and hormone usage. Breast cancer can be very limiting to one’s physical and mental state, and in order to get rid of breast cancer many do the following procedures of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy. On a yearly basis, the average number of deaths due to breast cancer in women are about 19.3% in every 100,000 women, and about 0.5-1% in every 1,000 men.
In order to spread and contribute to the awareness of breast cancer, Bryant High School organized a community walk on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, and joined others doing the same in a stroll around the park. Bryant Students and faculty were decked in pink to show their support as they walked for 2 miles. In addition, many other schools and communities appeared to show their support for breast cancer awareness as well. The park was filled with many holding posters and cheering. Students who participated in this event gained 4 hours of community service and attained free gifts from those hosting the event.
