SOFTBALL GIRLS VARSITY

Lady Owls

Division  AAA — Queens I

Head Coach

Dania Ghrawi

Based on the previous track records of the Softball Girls varsity team, it seems that the team holds a pretty good record. The team this year seems to be lacking something this year based on the history of their recent games. Dania Ghrawi is a College Now teacher in the school and had some things to say about this team’s season as the coach:

What expectations do you have for your new/returning team?

“We have only three returning players from last year- my expectations for them are more off the field, I expect them to teach the newer players the way the program runs. We respect one another at all times in regards to experience or year, we work hard on and off the field- my motto is we are STUDENT athletes, our education comes first, and lastly to always have fun!”

What drills do you typically practice for your team?

“Softball is made up of two pieces- fielding and hitting. For fielding we work on fielding ground balls and fly balls. We work on keeping the ball in front of us and then we work on situations, where to throw the ball based on where the runners are.

For hitting we work on the skills of hitting, we use the T, soft toss and individualized training on hitting. We also work on base running and other pieces to make us the best softball players!”

What is the biggest need in your team?

“Honestly this year we are a small team so the biggest need for this year and next would be to get more student athletes out to join softball. It is so much fun and students who join end up making connections that can last a lifetime. I played softball in high school and college, and I still speak and see some of my teammates. It’s an incredible experience, you learn how to work together and persevere. These skills are not only useful on the softball field but also in life. So, if anyone is interested, please come see me to join for next year or if you are a freshman or sophomore, you can still join the Junior Varsity Team.”

The coach wants education to come first which is a respectable decision, but it doesn’t hurt to also get students into the game too. While education is important, it’s also important to include a lot of athleticism into your day as it helps with practice and preparation in general. With the right push, the team can turn this around!
