On February 2 at 6pm, Bryant had their first theater show of the school year. With a half full show and loud applause, we received We Kill Monsters. This is a comedy and drama play by Qui Nguyen that tells the story about Agnes Evans, an average woman with a “boring life”, who loses her parents and sister Tilly in a car accident. When she started to move in with her boyfriend, she realized that she didn’t really know much about her sister, since they were never close. Later she finds a notebook in her sister’s bedroom which contains a game that Tilly created. Agnes decides to play the game with the help of a high schooler to be able to get to know who her sister was. She gets in the game and sees her sister and her friends. Through the journey of fighting monsters Agnes learns a lot from her sister and learns that it is good to have some fun in her life even though she’s older. This is everything Tilly wanted, for her older sister to have fun and to give her a glimpse of herself.

The play did a great job introducing the characters by being very descriptive and to show how each of them were very different and similar from themselves out of the game. The actors’ costumes looked like they were well designed to show each character’s personality.

There were a lot of comedic scenes that made the audience laugh and the audience was really engaged with the show. For instance, when Miles thought Agnes was dating one of her students, Chuck. Especially the way Chuck worded how he spent time with Agnes, it made Miles think that they had a secret relationship, since their friendship was hidden from him.

Many were recording and taking pictures to capture their favorite moments of the play. The stage also had a lot of creativity to it to be able to coordinate with the story line by using a big screen to change the setting and lights to complement each scene.  At the end of the play we learned to value the people around you before they pass away, because you’ll never know what might happen in the future. You might regret what you should have done when it’s already too late. You should never be ashamed of your hobbies, especially since the main character, Agnes, was too afraid to share about playing a game.
